845 Design Group served as the planner for the update to the master plan for this urban hospital campus. Our approach included conducting surveys, interviews and observations of over 25 hospital departments to understand the current state of operations. Our team was responsible for programming over 1 million square feet of space to better meet the current needs of patients and to assist the VA in decommissioning outdated buildings. In utilizing the VA’s space planning guidelines and input from the local hospital directors, our team right-sized departments, made recommendations for moving departments off campus, and phased out aging infrastructure as part of our final solution. The result was a phased plan of constructing new buildings, strategic departmental moves to achieve critical adjacencies and the removal of outdated facilities for this land-locked urban medical campus.
